A.C. Chase Announces Results Its Best Dressed List
Nicole Kidman Tops List
Audrey Hepburn Wins Best Dressed Of All Time
Hillary Clinton Has Most Potential
A.C. Chase, Jeweler to the Stars, announced its Best Dressed List. Results were tabulated from ballots received from TV and Hollywood wardrobe professionals.
Topping the Best Dressed List was Nicole Kidman, followed by Catherine Zeta Jones and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Most wardrobe professionals indicated that Kidman "dressed like a goddess." Catherine Zeta Jones was applauded for her old world glamour and allure. Sarah Jessica Parker, was lauded for setting her own style and voicing her personality through clothes."
In many ways, the list defies conventional wisdom. Although Hollywood is known for putting young, waif-like actresses on screen, wardrobe professionals admire many who do not fit this stereotype. Many women over age 50 were voted onto the list, including Diane Sawyer, Candace Bergen, Barbara Walters and Sophia Loren. Furthermore, those who do not fit the pencil-thin ideal were also included, including Queen Latifah and Oprah Winfrey. As one respondent stated, "Queen Latifah has great confidence in who she is, and Oprah Winfrey has truly come into her own, and is comfortable in own her skin. Their clothing and the way they present themselves reflects this, and it is beautiful."
Anna Nicole Smith tops the Worst Dressed List (consistently labeled "trashy" by respondents, followed by rock stars Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Cher and Mariah Carey, whom respondent considered "The Dean of the White Trash School of Fashion."
Politicians and spouses of politicians also fared poorly. First Lady Laura Bush (deemed frumpy), former First Lady Barbara Bush (dubbed by one as the Matron of Wal-Mart Couture), and Hillary Clinton (A Lesson in What Not to Wear) landed squarely on the worst dressed list. Also included was former EPA Director Christy Todd Whitman, whom one respondent encouraged to spend more time shopping since she no longer works in government. Rounding out the worst dressed list are Goldie Hawn and Darryl Hannah, who was chided for her "mermaid wear."
As an interesting note, wardrobe professionals came down hard on other fashion critics. Joan Rivers was easily voted on the list, and many wrote in the name of male fashion critic Steven Cojocaru, indicating that his clothing is detrimental to his work. As Shawn Dudley, wardrobe director of the long running soap Guiding Light put it, "it's hard to take him seriously when he dresses so outlandishly."
Topping the All Time Best Dressed List were Audrey Hepburn, whom professionals believed defined her era. Grace Kelly was noted for her classic elegance, and Coco Chanel was highlighted for inventing the business suit. Katherine Hepburn, Jacqueline Onassis, Princess Diana, Marlena Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Wallis Simpson and Lena Horne rounded out the top ten.
Although she did not fare well on the list, many professionals indicated that Hillary Clinton would be their top choice as a client. As one respondent stated, "Some dislike Hillary because they believe she is hard edged. Imagine what she could achieve if her image was softened by the clothes she wore." Respondents also indicated that they would like to dress actresses Charlize Theron, Today Show newswoman Anne Curry and of course, Nicole Kidman. As one stated, "who wouldn't want that job?"
